James Roumeliotis hopped out of an 8-year retirement and straight into the record books.The Tewksbury native jumped more than 100,000 consecutive times on a pogo stick at Medal of Honor Park in Southie on Saturday, shattering what had been the world record of 88,047.Roumoeliotis, who goes by the nickname “Pogo,” showed no signs of letting up as the clock struck 6 p.m., a whopping 10 hours after his day of jumping began.Saturday’s quest was Roumoeliotis’ first attempt at breaking the world record since he lost the title to Jack Sexty, of the United Kingdom, during Pogopalooza 2015 in Philadelphia.Roumoeliotis, now a Southie resident who works in medical technology software development, previously broke the record in 2017, raising money for medical research. PORTLAND, Maine — Tens of thousands of homes and businesses remained without power in New England on Saturday following powerful thunderstorms, and more rough weather was on the way.Thunderstorms hit the region hard on Friday and forecasts called for more rain and heavy wind Sunday and Monday. Tracy Cronin, an ICU nurse at Boston Children’s Hospital, initially did not get a pulse from a woman struck by lightning Saturday afternoon at Savin Hill Beach.But after helping to perform CPR on the woman, it came back, though the woman was not awake, Cronin said. There was a burn wound on the woman’s chest and Cronin said she was told there was an exit wound on her lower back.“Her pants were just like burned off of her and you could smell it,” Cronin told reporters.A state police spokesman said first responders from the State Police’s South Boston Barracks responded to a female struck by lightning at Savin Hill Beach around 3:35 p.m. The woman was transported to Boston Medical Center but her condition was not clear.Cronin said her boyfriend, also an ER nurse, came down to the beach, and the pair performed CPR for 15 to 20 minutes. CHICAGO — A popular Chicago bookstore reopened this month with a few changes.Semicolon Books in River West is continuing to thrive even while giving out free books. ‘A cheesy thing:’ Family sees suburban pizzeria as a way to give back "We are known for our commitment to bridge the literacy gap among minoritized communities," Danielle Mullen, the owner of the bookstore, said.Mullen reopened the store at 515 North Halstead this week.She purchased the building, renovated the space and became a non-profit."We have been doing a program called Clear the Shelves and we allow CPS students to come in and take the books they want free of charge," Mullen said.
